other.7z was one of three archives leaked to /ppg/ during the "gigaleak" on July 24, 2020. This was one of the most important and most talked-about leaks. The archive contained six more archives inside, each with lots of very important data.

Sub-archives

agb_bootrom.7z

agb_bootrom.7z contained two folders with the source code to the Gameboy Color's bootrom and the Gameboy Advance's bootrom. They were formatted as Subversion repositories.

  • agb_bootrom
    • agb_bootrom
      • [SVN files]
    • cgb_bootrom
      • [SVN files]

CGB.7z

CGB.7z contained two folders, with the source code for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX and three master ROMs for Hamtaro Ham-Hams Unite.

  • AZL__ゼルダの伝説 夢を見る島DX (The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX)
    • Source

dmg.7z

dmg.7z contained the source code for The Legend of Zelda: Dreaming Island.

Famicom_NES.7z

Famicom_NES.7z contained a master ROM database for American and Japanese NES games. This could have been used for the development of the Wii's Virtual Console, assuming that Nintendo didn't just download their own ROMs from the Internet.

  • Famicom_NES
    • HVC
    • NES
      • NOA
      • OEM
        • 001~300
        • 301~600
        • 601~900
      • ROYALTY

SFC.7z

SFC.7z contained tons and tons of data, completely outweighing the other folders. This archive contained the source code and master ROMs for dozens of SNES/Super Famicom games.

Findings:

  • Super Mario RPG master rom other\SFC\ROM\SuperMarioRPG
  • Star Fox 2 master rom other\SFC\ROM\StarFox2
  • Star Fox source code other\SFC\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox
  • Star Fox 2 source code other\SFC\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox2
  • Yoshi's Island source code other\SFC\SFC\ソースデータ\ヨッシーアイランド
  • Super Mario Kart source code other\SFC\SFC\ソースデータ\MarioKart
  • F-Zero source code other\SFC\SFC\ソースデータ\FZERO

  • "super_donkey" (prototype) other\SFC\ソースデータ\ヨッシーアイランド\ツール\donkey_test
  • "sleep_test" (prototype) other\SFC\ソースデータ\ヨッシーアイランド\ツール\sleep_test
  • Star Fox 2 prototype builds (several - extremely early, including the CES build) other\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox2\KAWAGOE, other\SFC\ソースデータ\StarFox2\SF2, other\NEWS\StarFox2\KAWAGOE, other\NEWS\StarFox2\SF2
  • Partial source code from the original NES Super Mario Bros other\SFC\ソースデータ\srd13-SFCマリオコレクション\export\mario-z\linkp\mario-n1\mn_hp_smenmy.asm

NEWS.7z

The other.7z archive also contained a directory named "NEWS". The NEWS folder contained source code for various SNES games, just like SFC.7z. However, inside NEWS, there was also a folder named テープリストア ("source data" in Japanese), containing seven tape drive backups from the Sony NEWS workstations used at Nintendo, with files dating back to the early 1990's.

The reason why there are only seven is because during when Nintendo originally tried to recover these, some time around 2016, the rest of the tape drive backups (around 30-40 of them) failed to read, and only seven of them were recoverable. These remaining backups contained original source code and developer files related to many SNES games, including titles like Star Fox 2 and Super Mario Kart. The contents of the folders outside of NEWS were most likely transferred over from these tape drive backups located in テープリストア.

Findings in the contents of other\NEWS\テープリストア\:

  • Super Mario World development assets NEWS_11\hino\z-mario-4
  • Yoshi's Cookie development assets NEWS_11\hino\z-mario-cookie
  • Many internal Nintendo email backups NEWS_02\usr01\uji\Mail (ROMs were found in the attachments)
  • Conversion tools for SNES "OBJ" files NEWS_05\home\watanabe\INDY\CONVERT\OBJ-DATA
  • "IRISGL" demo, meant to run on an SGI Indy NEWS_05\home\watanabe\INDY\GLTEST
  • Several Super Mario Kart prototype builds NEWS_05\home\kimura (located in "mak.lzh", "kart", "util" folders, most builds date back to 1991-1992)
  • Archive containing Super Mario Kart source code NEWS_05\home\kimura\kart\mak.lzh
  • SuperFX test programs from 1991 NEWS_05\home\kimura\polygon.lzh\polygon\sample0\CHIPTEST.ROM, CHIPTEST15.ROM
